Drinks stay hot or cold for up to seven hours in this insulated, double-walled, stainless-steel travel mug from OXO. Plus, three silicone seals in the lid opening prevent leaks and drips from spoiling clothes on the way to work. One hand is all that's needed to operate this mug: a button in the middle of the lid opens the drinking seal (a red background alerts the user to its open position); and then closes the device. Letting a few seconds lapse before closing will allow liquid in the spout area to drain back inside, thus preventing drips. The sleek, brushed-finish, stainless-steel body of the mug fits any standard car cup holder. OXO's signature soft, non-slip material rings the mug neck, allowing for a secure grip when drinking or unscrewing the contoured lid. The mug holds 14 ounces--room for a double-tall latte with extra foam. A marked `max' line inside prevents over-filling. Have an Oxo Good Grips LiquiSeal Travel mug for over a year now and have been amazed at the amount of particles that come out of the mug every time I clean it. Since there is NO WAY to get to the insides of the lid and its mechanism, the only way I knew how to clean it was to shake vigorously, run hot water through it, fill the mug with soapy water and open spout then keep shaking it vigorously until all the water runs out. Repeat, repeat, repeat.
YET, despite all of this, today I decided to get a couple of toothpicks and pipe brushes and see if I could do better. After poking around, scraping and scratching, I was amazed at the pile of JUNK that came our of the lid. It was incredible. Particle after particle. Old dried up coffee, dried and decomposed milk, hardened and rotten sweetener, etc. all types of black, gray and brown flakes and particles. Disgusting!
This is what I have been drinking for weeks and months. No wonder I got sick on several occasions.
After the cleaning, I decided to do the water routine, and again I was shocked to see the amount of junk that kept coming out of the lid. Where was it all adhered do? How many parts are in the lid? How does it get so filthy?
What was the manufacturer thinking?

I have used this travel mug every day for about six months. While cleaning it one day, I noticed black stuff coming from the lid. After removing the gasket and pulling the lid apart, I was shocked. Inside, the mold that had grown was absolutely gross. I cannot believe I was drinking this. I certainly hope that no one gets sick from using this mug. Since this happened, I have read reviews about ways to clean it, but I really don't think any of them would really get rid of this buildup.

Don't buy this mug or any mug like it until you're certain that you can clean the lid.
The design of these lids (especially this one) are too clever by half. It's a classic demonstration of engineering without testing.
You will be disgusted (or amazed) by what grows in your lid over the course of three or four weeks.
Here's the news though: an OXO spokesman told me that this mug's lid is being redesigned so that it's cleanable. She said the mug would be available Christmas (2010). Hold tight until then.
Can't clean the mug itself August 9, 2010

Unlike other reviewers, I haven't had the mug long enough for the top to become gummy and dirty. My problem was that within two weeks of buying the mug, I could no longer clean the inside. It smells like spoiled milk no matter what I do. The stainless part is not stamped out of one piece of metal. Instead the bottom is pressed on, and I believe by leaving coffee and milk in the mug for many hours, it worked it's way into the seams where the metal is stamped together. I hand cleaned it to death, used vinegar and hot water, and finally put it through several dishwasher cycles, but the mug still smells bad.
I will look to replace this mug with one that is stamped out of one piece of stainless.

The designers were probably too preoccupied in making sure it doesn't leak from the top...this thing leaks from the side ALL THE TIME!!! It ruined bags, jackets, books, etc and made for miserable commutes until I replaced it with a better model (Thermos).
