Product Description
The New England Journal of Medicine is the most widely read, cited, and influential general medical periodical in the world. Since its inception in 1812, NEJM has published the best research at the interface of biomedical science and clinical practice, in understandable and clinically useful formats. Readers consider NEJM to be the “gold standard” for the latest research and best practices in medicine. In addition to research reports in each weekly issue, NEJM publishes review articles summarizing knowledge about a specific disease or treatment; editorials and essays interpreting and commenting on issues in medicine; case reports on interesting clinical problems for physicians to solve; and other features exploring health policy, regulatory issues, and special topics. The Kindle edition of The New England Journal of Medicine contains articles found in the print edition, including all tables, charts, and clinical images (some non-clinical images may be excluded). There may be a lack of clarity for some tables and illustrations due to their size and layout. Some features such as advertising, classifieds and CME are not currently available. To keep you up to date, weekly issues of the New England Journal of Medicine are auto-delivered wirelessly to your Kindle every Thursday.

Not good for the Kindle 2 April 7, 2010 MajDoc (MT) First, the written content is the same as the print version. However, trying to read it on a Kindle 2 (along with trying to decipher the graphs/tables) is next to impossible. I imagine it might be better on a DX, but see the reviews from people who get this on a DX, they don't seem to think it is great either. I went back to the print edition for now.
Finally - A Medical Journal - Want more December 11, 2009 C. Heath (Michigan) This is a quick and easy way to stay current, I have no problem with the formating. I like to be able to go back to past journals using the archive button. Also, you can "clip" key portions of the article for later reference. I truely wish that more medicine journals were available. A direct connection to Pub-Med would be great, but even a wider variety of medical journals to start would be great start. I would like to see the Joint Commission publications available for the Kindle...we will always want more. While this was not so much a review as it was a request.
Kindle version too expensive for students August 25, 2009 Paul (Fort Wayne, IN) 2 out of 9 found this review helpful
As a student, I would like to read the New England Journal of Medicine on my Kindle, however the online version for students is much cheaper direct from their website. I really wish the price was more comparable as I would love to affordably read it on my Kindle.
From one Non-Doctor to another ... I had a flashback to proofing my labs in school July 17, 2009 Rayynn (Chicago, IL USA) 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
People got pretty testy with the last reviewer for writing a justified bad review. This magazine is a medical journal. As a person who is NOT in a medical field... These are good writers. They explain everything well. Yes.. they use some technical jargon. If it's not explained and you really want to know the extensive details behind all the different types of flues out there... you can look it up. Or.. you can just not care like me and skip it.... I got the basic idea. History of the flu.
The entire magazine isn't about various diseases. It's kind of exciting to read about how current policy is affecting the medical world. Your local newspaper probably covers a few of these stories as well... but not in detail. Ie. You might hear a story about colonoscopys being better than endoscopys because of "medical research." You'll get a quote from some doctor and then the article is over.
SOME articles in this journal read like a scientific experiments. They start with the Abstract (Concluding in the final paragraph). There is a tremendous amount of detail given. Ie. the amount of sensitivity patients experience... information on bowel preparation... ?? I don't care.
The next section of the article is labeled "Article" .. Followed by "Methods". ... Then more detailed blah blah blah.
The magazine is split into several sections:
Perspectives, Original Articles, Clinical Therapies, Review Articles, Images in Clinical Medicine, Case Records, Editorials, Clinical Implication, Correspondence, Book Reviews.
CONCLUSION:
Minus one star because I'm interested in knowing what's going on in the medical world... but not for 8.99 a month. I think some of the writers continue on repeating various data in different ways multiple times. Perhaps if I were more interested I wouldn't mind.
4 stars because the articles are original. I like that the magazine provides a combination of experiments and opinions. Material is explained well for everyone. You get a little bit of medical history and medical current events.
I think the publisher already mentioned that the charts are somewhat too small... So I can't really take off any stars for that. Maybe they're not so blurred on the DX version. The magazine is very well formatted for kindle.
You get two weeks free. Try it. See if you like it.
Pleasantly surprised - highlighting and annotation ARE available July 7, 2009 Woody (Vermont) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Kindle edition of NEJM has been converted to AZW format instead of simply being a PDF file. The (highly desirable) consequence of this conversion is that articles retain the ability to add highlights and annotations, which would not be possible in PDF format.
As far as the reading experience goes, many tables and figures are quite readable although tables and figures that are busy may have text that is too small to read--even if you rotate the page to enlarge the text somewhat. The workaround for this would probably be for the graphics and tables to be enlarged prior to conversion, for greater readability. Or, of course, Amazon could add the ability to zoom in on graphics, figures and tables like can be done on the Sony Reader.
In reply to the poster who bemoaned the fact that this journal is not easily readable by the lay public: yes, that is entirely true. The NEJM is one of the most highly regarded medical journals available and it is geared not only to practicing physicians but also to presenting the latest research findings. As such, it would be unreasonable to expect that most lay people could pick up a copy of NEJM and read its articles with any significant level of comprehension.
That being said, it would be a good idea if the description indicated that this is a journal intended for medical practitioners and not for the majority of lay people. The other thing that probably should be noted is that this journal is intended for reading primarily on the Kindle DX. I haven't yet tried it on my Kindle 2, but I suspect that the reading experience on the K2 would be considerable less satisfactory. However, given the 14 day free trial period, nothing is lost by trying it for an issue or two.
Now, if we could only see other medical journals (Lancet, Annals of Internal Medicine, Transfusion, etc.) formatted specifically for the Kindle!
Addendum to above: it turns out that figure, tables, and illustrations ARE zoom-enabled, I just missed it the first time around (my bad). Hence, I would change my rating to 5 stars if only I were able to do so.
